At Select Escapes we're keen to promote sustainability wherever we can. This doesn't mean not travelling, as this in itself this could have a catastrophic result on communities that have become reliant on tourism and set aside traditional industries in favour of the tourism dollar. We believe that all travel can have a positive impact but that we, as travel industry professionals, should promote the need to be mindful of the destinations and the planet overall. Below you'll find measures that we have taken to help promote sustainable holidays.

Plastic Waste - Leave only Footprints - "The David Attenborough effect", as well call it, has been significant in society in the last couple of years. Of course when we're away from home it's not always as easy to fulfill a no plastic waste use ethic and the no liquids through security at airports has of course contributed to the issue. To reflect our concerns about plastic waste and to help our clients with reducing single use plastic usage on holiday, in 2018 Select Escapes introduced metal water bottles for all our customers booking a holiday of 7 nights or more. Select Escapes followers have totally embraced our bottles and we've had pictures of our bottles on their travels from as far away as Easter Island! Airports are beginning to introduce "water fountains" and many airside airport restaurants will fill your bottles for free. Please make sure you check advice on drinking water for the destinations you visit before drinking water directly from the tap. There are plentiful resources available online and we recommend you visit the Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel pages for the most up to date advice.

Sustainable Holidays and the Green Palm

At Select Escapes we work with many different holiday operators, hotels, cruise lines and technologies to offer all types of holiday across the globe and the focus is not purely on "Green", "Ethical" and "Sustainable" practices. However many of the operators and hotels we work with go the extra mile in terms of sustainability and where relevant, we will highlight these. If you see the "Green Palm" symbol on any of our pages, this indicates that the operator / hotel / cruise line goes the extra mile to be sustainable their operations. It might be a ban on single use plastics, or the use of local produce, or the employment of local staff, or eco practices in their operations. Whatever it is, we will highlight why we believe this holiday deserves our "Green Palm" and give you the links to explore this further. We like to think of this as a celebration of holidays that go the extra mile. If your chosen holiday does not appear on our pages please do ask if you are interested in specific elements of sustainability. Please note that the "Green Palm" is not an official award of sustainability rather a recommendation from Select Escapes.

Travel by Rail

Are you concerned about the impact of aviation on the the environment? Rather than offsetting your air travel emissions, perhaps, where possible, you might like to look at alternative means of transport to your holiday destination, with the added benefit of visiting areas off the main tourist trails. Please ask us and we'll happily do some research for you.
